Working from the road

We’re taking in the sights and sounds of historical Williamsburg, Virginia this week, which means I get to break out my mobile studio. I also installed Source Connect recently to be able to bridge to ISDN from a WIFI connection. Having that kind of technology in your back pocket can really bring an added sense of relaxation to a “vacation”. Really great knowing that when important ISDN sessions come up, I won’t have to take the time and trouble to book a local studio, the nearest being an hour down the road in Richmond.

The CEntrance Mic Port Pro is another awesome piece of equipment for a mobile set-up although it’s a little cranky when coupling with Source Connect. I’m noticing some digital artifacts that could be driver related. Their tech department is helping me to diagnose the issues and though we haven’t reached a determination as to what’s causing the interference, I’ve found a work around that makes it rock solid for my mobile-recording needs. If you’re noticing similar issues, feel free to contact me and I’ll share what I’ve found that works.

I also nabbed another little gem for my mobile studio bag recently. It’s called a Super Cantenna  and basically serves as a WIFI antenna to zero in on a wireless signal that may otherwise be hard to connect to, due to distance. Of course, it’s probably wise to remember that in some states, it’s technically illegal to connect to wireless signals that you aren’t authorized to use. Though at the resort we’re staying, the Cantenna has taken a signal from the resort activity center nearby and boosted it from around 50-60% to 100% reception. And let’s face it, us voice guys and gals like our bandwidth BIG.

Technology truly is amazing. It’s good to be leash-free in 2008!

    Joe,

Hope you and the family enjoy Williamsburg! Haven’t been there in years, but I look back now and remember how cool it was. Definitely NOT Northern PA…
